Join us for an evocative evening that explores the spirit and place of New England through the lens of experimental photography. This panel discussion celebrates the launch of The Haunted: Contemporary Photography Conjured in New England, edited by photographer Jocelyn Lee, and brings together several featured artists in conversation with the book’s themes, their process of "conjuring" images, and their deep ties to the region.

Moderated by Anjuli Lebowitz, PhD, Judy Glickman Lauder Curator of Photography at the PMA, the panel will share the book’s origin story and offer a glimpse into the haunting and beautiful work within its pages.

Panelists include: Barbara Bosworth, Pia Paulina Guilmoth, David Hilliard, Jocelyn Lee, Peter Schellenberger, and Shoshannah White

A rare chance to hear from the artists behind the lens—and to reflect on how the uncanny, the atmospheric, and the experimental shape our vision of New England today.

This program is presented in collaboration with SPEEDWELL Contemporary

ABOUT THE BOOK

THE HAUNTED—Contemporary Photography Conjured in New England brings together two kinds of art created in New England: poetry from the past two centuries and contemporary photography. Through this juxtaposition, The Haunted reminds us of New England’s complex history as a site for great creativity and individual expression, and gives voice to its artists' deep connection to the land and nature.

The Haunted also invokes multiple histories unique to New England, including early Puritanism with its fear of witchcraft and sorcery, as well as the rich tradition of lyric and confessional poetry created by New England poets dating back to the 17th century.

Featured photographers include Tad Beck, Tabitha Bernard, Barbara Bosworth, Neville Caulfield, Caleb Charland, Jed Devine, Smith Galtney, Kate Greene, Pia-Paulina Guilmoth, Tonee Harbert, Cig Harvey, Dylan Hausthor, David Hilliard, Jocelyn Lee, Amanda Marchand, Leah Sobsey, Emily Sheffer, Peter Shellenberger, Wendy Small, Cheryle St. Onge, and Shoshannah White.

Featured Poets include Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Mihku Paul, Edna St. Vincent Millay, Anne Sexton, and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow among others.

Edited by Jocelyn Lee and designed by Emily Sheffer.
