Art Outside and On the Trail

Creating connections to the natural world through art and culture

We’ve placed more than two dozen reproductions of art from the PMA collection at five locations across the state. Art is the heart of our communities, and the PMA is proud to partner with L.L.Bean, the Maine Department of Agriculture, the Conservation and Forestry's Bureau of Parks and Land, and the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens to bring our collection beyond the museum and out into Maine’s parks, trails, and open spaces.

Feeling inspired?

Take photos along the Art Trail and tag @portlandmuseum for a chance to be shared on our social channels.

Feeling adventurous?

Check-in at all five locations before October 29th and receive a free family membership to the PMA by sending an email to pmaarttrail@portlandmuseum.org.*

*A family membership will be given upon email receipt. To be accepted, please provide evidence of visitation at each of the five locations listed above. Photos and/or receipts of entry will be accepted.

Entry fees apply at Maine State Parks and Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens.

Sustainability and Art for All

We have come a long way from initially improving access to the collection through Your Museum, Reimagined to investing in DEAI to the development of Art for All and most recently, our Sustainability efforts. It’s all connected, and a result of what can happen when institutions are supported by and reflect their vibrant and engaged communities. This includes opening our doors for free admission to all every Friday night** and—bringing the art to you.

As we build on Your Museum, Reimagined, we know that we have a role to play in engaging the public and activating our communities around global climate action. We believe in the transformative power of art and that means bringing the art “beyond the brick,” in unexpected and natural places where artist and inspiration came together to create our most beloved works.
