ARRT! (Artists’ Rapid Response Team!)

January 29, 2021

Artists’ Rapid Response Team! (also known as ARRT!) is a collective of year-round members of the Union of Maine Visual Artists (UMVA). UMVA is dedicated to upholding the dignity of artists, while creating positive social change through the arts.

Since 2012, ARRT! has created more than 400 banners and props about economic, environmental, immigrant, LBGQT+, social justice, racial equity, and women’s issues.

In 2020, ARRT! changed its ways of working and broadened its reach due to the pandemic. Instead of large-scale banners painted together indoors, they painted signs outdoors in small groups or individually. In partnership with Lincoln County Indivisible, a political action group, ARRT! created more than 50 large yard signs (plus an additional 350 printed copies) that were displayed around Lincoln County and used at anti-racism and post-office rallies. The signs celebrate a sense of community, address core issues, and proclaim support for social change.

ARRT!’s posters on view represent a piece of the 2020 Maine experience and elevate the intersection of art and community. These signs give voice to Maine residents, installed in front yards of rural Maine, alongside sidewalks of downtown shops, and held high in rallies and demonstrations on roadsides and urban streets. The worn signs display evidence of their use that further reflect the struggles of the year.
