Winslow Homer Studio

From 1883 to 1910, the American painter Winslow Homer lived and worked in a coastal studio in Prouts Neck, Maine, where he created many of his masterpieces. In 2006, the PMA purchased the property and embarked on a six-year renovation project that restored the building to how it appeared during Homer’s life and, in 2012, opened its doors to the public for the first time.

Winslow Homer Studio Tours put you uniquely in touch with Maine’s artistic heritage, allowing you to walk the floors and balconies where Homer once walked, and to be inspired by the place that inspired one of America’s greatest painters. With its combination of cultural resonance, historical significance, and natural beauty, Winslow Homer Studio Tours offer a singular experience that you will remember for years to come and want to share with others.

Take a Winslow Homer Studio Tour and discover why this location is so crucial to our understanding of Winslow Homer, of American art—and, indeed, of Maine.

The Mystique of Maine Package

For centuries, Maine has served as a respite from the pressures and pace of everyday life, a place where people could slow down and luxuriate in sparkling coastlines, cool lakes, and crisp, salty air. For many visitors, the Maine experience was a rare indulgence, and they made sure to savor it. They stayed in magnificent hotels, ate sumptuous meals, and stretched the sunset hour into long, languorous evenings.

One such destination was the modest peninsula of Prouts Neck—just 14 miles from the transportation hub of Portland yet secluded enough to have a restorative quality to it. Many people flocked to Prouts Neck—but none more famous than Winslow Homer, who was so enamored with it that he moved there in 1884 and made the mystique of Maine manifest through the masterpieces he created there.

Inspired by the historical allure of Prouts Neck, the PMA proudly offers the Mystique of Maine Package, weaving two time-honored Maine traditions—the luxury inn and the artist retreat—into one incredible evening. Now, you and up to 11 of your guests can enjoy a private tour of the Winslow Homer Studio led by the PMA Director or a PMA Curator, followed by a champagne toast and hors d’oeuvres on the piazza where Homer himself enjoyed many leisurely evenings. Afterward, you will be escorted to the Black Point Inn, where dinner reservations await.

The Black Point Inn was established in 1878. The Winslow Homer Studio was built in 1884. Together, these places offer an experience refined over 130 years—the quintessential Maine experience. It's  perfect for wedding parties, reunions, anniversaries, birthdays, and more—it’s an intimate experience that will make any special occasion into an unforgettable one.
