In conjunction with our current photography exhibition, outside the frame: todd webb in africa, PMA Films will be screening films throughout may that are in dialogue with the questions posed by the exhibit. 

Screening at noon on Sunday, May 7: First World Festival of Negro Arts and African Rhythmus are both medium-length films that chronicle a 1966 celebration of Black culture, but their missions (one rapturous, one diplomatic) and aesthetic styles could not be much different. Get tickets here!

Screening at noon on Sunday, May 14: Jojolo and Black Girl offer contrasting views of a woman’s relocation to France: the former is an effervescent and stylish short, while the latter is a concise and totemic work of anti-colonial filmmaking by one of Africa’s greatest filmmakers. Screening at noon on Sunday, May 21: Paulin Soumanou Vieyra’s short films, meanwhile, offer a clear-eyed and wide-ranging portrait of a nascent African film culture in an era of decolonization. Get tickets here!
