The Portland Museum of Art stands today as a testament to the extraordinary generosity of Margaret Jane Mussey Sweat, who, in honor of her late husband, Lorenzo de Medici Sweat, gifted their home-the McLellan House-along with the funds to establish the L. D. M. Sweat Memorial Galleries in 1908. Her visionary philanthropy laid the foundation for the museum’s enduring legacy, inspiring generations of art enthusiasts.
