Spotlight: The Wyeths

November 6, 2026 through May 16, 2027

Across three generations, N. C. Wyeth (1882–1945), Andrew Wyeth (1917–2009), and Jamie Wyeth (born 1946) have claimed preeminent places within the American Realist tradition. Though each developed a distinct artistic vision, their paintings and drawings share a remarkable ability to evoke emotion, mystery, and the unseen through masterful treatments of light, shadow, and the natural world.

Bringing together works from the Portland Museum of Art’s collection, private collections in Maine, and the Wyeth family, Spotlight: The Wyeths explores artistic connections that span generations. Through evocative landscapes and intimate interiors, the exhibition reveals how all three artists transform familiar places into scenes charged with psychological depth and emotional resonance.

Often absent of figures, the compositions in this installation nevertheless suggest a powerful human presence, inviting viewers to consider what lies beyond the visible world. Together, the works illuminate a shared artistic sensibility that continues to distinguish the Wyeth family’s enduring contribution to American art.
