The PMA brings together three artists of the same generation — Elizabeth Atterbury, Eve Biddle, and Sascha Braunig — for a rare conversation timed to a brief overlap of Biddle and Braunig’s exhibitions. Though their practices span different media and perspectives, Atterbury, Biddle, and Braunig share intersecting concerns and generational context. Join them in conversation for an evening exploring where their work converges, diverges, and surprises.

About Artists in Conversation
Artists in Conversation is a program series at the Portland Museum of Art that brings artists together for public dialogue around shared moments of exhibition, generation, or theme. Launched in November 2026, the series creates opportunities for intergenerational dialogue and interdisciplinary exchange, pairing emerging and established artists in conversations that reveal unexpected connections across practice and perspective. Open to PMA members and the public, Artists in Conversation invites audiences into the ideas and relationships shaping contemporary art today.

Artists in Conversation is made possible with the generous support of Bruce Moore and Michael Alper.

Exhibitions

Elizabeth Atterbury (b.1982) is an artist based in Portland, Maine. Her studio practice moves between two and three dimensions and is grounded by a curiosity in language and objects/object-making. Often of personal significance, the forms used in her work draw from multiple sources including memories, family history, the natural world, and everyday life.

Solo exhibitions include, The Center for Maine Contemporary Art, Rockland, ME, The Clark Art Institute, Williamstown, MA, Colby College Museum of Art, Waterville, ME, DOCUMENT, Chicago, IL and Lisbon, Portugal, and Mrs. Maspeth, NY. Group exhibitions include The Farnsworth Art Museum, Rockland, ME, deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln, MA, Portland Museum of Art, Portland, ME, Crisp-Ellert Art Museum, St.Augustine, FL, and The ICA at MECA&D, Portland, ME, among others. Atterbury’s work is in the collection of the Portland Museum of Art, The Farnsworth Art Museum, the Colby College Museum of Art and CELINE. Since 2017, Elizabeth Atterbury and artist Anna Hepler have collaborated on four Percent for Art  commissions across the state of Maine.

Eve Biddle (born 1982) is an artist, culture maker, and collaborator. Her work lies at the intersection of making objects, making connections between people, curating, building projects and institutions, helping to bring other artists’ art into the world, and making and facilitating public art.  Her creative process is deeply personal, shaped by familial influences including her parents' photography and sculpture, and her own bodily experiences—both beautiful and peculiar. She’s a founding co-director of the Wassaic Project, a contemporary art institution in Wassaic, NY.

Recent exhibitions include The Portland Museum of Art, Portland, ME,  The Williams College Museum of Art in Williamstown, MA, Davidson Gallery in New York City, The Buffalo Institute for Contemporary Art in Buffalo, NY, The Museum of Art and Design, New York City and Sargent’s Daughters, New York City.

Sascha Braunig (b. 1983, Qualicum Beach, BC) devotes her critical focus to the capaciousness and limitations of the feminine form under duress. Braunig’s figures teeter towards overextension—waists are pinched to extremity; appendages are restricted or decked in barbs; phantom silhouettes sinuously negotiate and adapt to the contours of their technicolor environments. Drawing on feminist artistic discourse, Braunig’s imaginaries engage the ways that gender performance and systems of power are replicated. Training, fitting, and reinforcement are recurring motifs in the severe and sometimes sinister crucibles which Braunig’s figures endure. Cast in vibrant complementary palettes and anchored through Braunig’s graphic, tensile formal vocabulary, her images recapitulate and usurp foundational codes of gendered visuality to create surreal and unequivocally emblematic scenes.

Sascha Braunig holds a BFA from Cooper Union and an MFA in painting from Yale University, and has been awarded residencies at MacDowell, the Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program, and Surf Point. Selected solo exhibitions include François Ghebaly, New York and Los Angeles, USA; Oakville Galleries, Ontario, Canada; Magenta Plains, New York, USA; Office Baroque, Brussels, Belgium; Kunstall Stavanger, Norway; Atlanta Contemporary, Atlanta, USA; and MoMA PS1, New York, USA. Her work has been featured in institutional exhibitions including the Quebec City Biennial; Oakville Galleries, Ontario, Canada; the Portland Museum of Art, Portland, USA; National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne, Australia; Aïshti Foundation, Beirut, Lebanon; Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, Cleveland, USA; and the New Museum Triennial, New York, USA.
