Free Weekend Look Back: Pride and Juneteenth
June 29, 2023
We want to relive this special weekend all over again, so here are some photos and memories we wanted to share with you from this year’s pride and juneteenth celebrations!
Spirits weren’t dampened despite all the rain during the Portland Pride! Parade on Saturday, June 17. Before the celebration, the museum was filled with visitors exploring the galleries, as well as getting ready for the parade with beaded bracelets, temporary tattoos, face gems. When it was time to march, we all gathered together along with local community organizations to celebrate our community. Thank you to everyone who marched and cheered with us!
The fun continued on Juneteenth, Monday, June 19, with artist Kevin Xiques for an all-ages art making activity. Young artists collaborated with Kevin on a large-scale artwork in front of the museum using lines, colors, forms, and shapes in this Freestyle Mark Making activity. A panel discussion happened later in the day with artist Athena Lynch, outdoorsman Alex Obregon, Seth Goldstein of Atlantic Black Box, and sailer Brad Hughes about stereotypes, tropes, and bias about Black people and their relationship with water.
Stay tuned to learn more about our upcoming free weekends and family days!
