We are extremely saddened to share the news that longtime PMA Trustee James A. Houle passed away on Monday, September 5.

Jim was currently serving as Trustee Emeritus after having served multiple terms as a regular Trustee beginning in 2003. Those who had the privilege of spending time with Jim will remember his steadfast commitment the PMA and the Board. He shared his knowledge and expertise as a member of the Governance, Bylaws, and Ethics committees over the years, and worked tirelessly on the museum’s strategic plans, bylaws, and other policies—Jim could be counted on to do the crucial behind-the-scenes work that is so important to a healthy nonprofit organization. Jim was also a longtime member and Chair of the Collection Committee (stepping off in 2018 to spend more time with family and friends in his retirement) and brought great enthusiasm and professionalism to that committee. He was a devoted ambassador and fundraiser for the PMA, serving on the former Development Committee for many years and rarely missing a PMA event or program. Jim was gracious with his time and spent many hours working alongside staff members, who in turn benefitted from his guidance and leadership. His loss will be deeply felt by the Portland community to which he was so dedicated.

We at the PMA are grateful and honored to have had the opportunity to work with Jim and will miss his quiet humor and his friendship.
