“Uncharted Waters” Film Series
August 3, 2022
In conjunction with the ongoing exhibition Flying Woman: The Paintings of Katherine Bradford, PMA Films is pleased to present a series of films that engage with the themes of Bradford’s vibrant and gently subversive work.
Murina, the new debut feature by preternaturally gifted filmmaker Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović, finds a teenager on the cusp of adulthood looking to overcome her rigidly patriarchal upbringing on the stunning Adriatic coast. Undine, by the quietly masterful German director Christian Petzold (Transit, Phoenix), is a swoony and thoughtful reimagining of the myth of Ondine, a water sprite given human life after she falls in love with a man (who must remain faithful to her or face fatal consequences). Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Céline Sciamma’s ravishing and universally acclaimed romance, is a period film about a painter tasked with clandestinely capturing the visage of a rebellious young woman. Set in an environment nearly devoid of men, Sciamma’s film reconfigures the camera’s gaze and imagines a world liberated from patriarchal concerns.
