Gregory Jamie

The watercolors on view here by Gregory Jamie are part of an ongoing series of paintings that play with folklore as a non-nostalgic, immediate, and dreamlike form.

In each painting, there is an odd juxtaposition of vibrant colors and muted, dark washes in the nonsensical settings.

We find mythic beings, whose bodily forms are androgynous or otherwise unspecified, caught in nightmarish landscapes—some wear masks and tease animals, others float in rivers or baths, perhaps conversing with spirits. Collectively, Jamie’s paintings present a nonlinear narrative about fictional and childlike creatures who are punished by nature for wandering outside of their environments. Jamie’s characters are ultimately consumed by nature. According to the artist, “the myths aren’t established, the symbolism has no frame of reference, but the stories are vibrant fairy tales that are endless.”

“Gregory Jamie’s understated watercolors create powerful open-ended narratives. In a year that relentlessly challenged us individually and collectively, Jamie’s dream-like compositions somehow feel simultaneously embedded deep within the individual psyche, while also encompassing the collective tribulations of our existence together.”
