“Surrealism Sunday” Film Series
August 3, 2022
Alongside the ongoing exhibition Surrealist Play Gone Astray, PMA Films is pleased to present two playful and dazzling works of filmic surrealism in repertory on Sunday mornings in September.
In Daisies, a landmark work of feminist cinema by the groundbreaking Czech filmmaker Věra Chytilová, two women (both named Marie) deem the world “spoiled,” and as a consequence decide to spoil themselves by means of a series of raucous and provocative pranks. Daisies screens in a brand-new 4k restoration. The Exterminating Angel, arguably the greatest film by a filmmaker synonymous with surrealism (Luis Buñuel), depicts a high-society dinner party whose guests mysteriously find themselves unable to leave. Buñuel’s ingenious film is a scabrous condemnation of social elites who fail to recognize that their status depends entirely on the labor of the working class.
