Lily Hutchins, Losing Time

July 5, 2023

My biggest fear is forgetting the present moment, whether it be an important event, a once-in-a-lifetime experience, or an obscure everyday occurrence. My three pieces represent the loss of core childhood memories, imitating the form of sensory neurons which transmit and make sense of these memories as well as trigger the feeling of nostalgia. The first piece is characterized by the simplicity and roundness of the rings which contain small objects that serve as a reminder of my first house and my youngest years. The slight movement of the rings emulates a mobile hanging above a crib. The second piece is more flawed, the rings stretched and the items more clustered. By the third piece, an indiscernible pile of photos — the last proof of my past experiences — is fully engulfed in a wrap of wire, spinning as a result of the string it hangs from to symbolize continuous and exponential loss of memory.
