  Museum Playdate is a monthly morning for young children and their caregivers to slow down, explore, and make things together. Our educator-led experiences are designed for our youngest visitors and their adults in mind. Every gathering has its own theme, with gallery adventures, art projects, storytime, and family activities—plus free coffee and a chance for caregivers to connect with others.   The Art of Intaglio Printmaking: Live Demonstrations

  Discover the printmaking process behind the exhibition Winslow Homer: Painter, Etcher. Printmaker Winslow Trainum demonstrates the art of intaglio printmaking, inking an etched copper plate, wiping it by hand, and running it through a traditional press to reveal an image transferred from plate to paper. Working from his studio at Prouts Neck, Maine, Homer created a remarkable series of etchings that showcased both technical skill and his enduring fascination with the sea. This live demonstration brings that process to life, offering a rare opportunity to see how an etched image emerges from a copper plate. A limited number of prints will be available as take-home souvenirs. About Winslow Trainum Winslow Trainum (Winslow Loves You!) is a community-based printmaker born and raised in Charlottesville, Virginia, while currently working out of Portland, Maine. Throughout his work, Winslow uses experimental printmaking techniques with an emphasis on etching and silkscreen to provide proof of magic in printmaking and tell stories of unreal dimensions. In his senior year at Maine College of Art & Design, Winslow worked alongside Ramey Mize, curator of Winslow Homer: Painter, Etcher as a curatorial intern, using his expertise in etching to consult and collaborate on the exhibition.

  Drop-in Mobile Making with ArtVan

  3:00 PM — 7:00 PM

  Join ArtVan’s teaching artists for a drop-in mobile-making activity using mixed media and spiral-cutting techniques. This relaxed, hands-on experience encourages presence and experimentation, with each participant creating a mandala mobile to take home. ArtVan delivers free art therapy services to fifteen neighborhoods across Central, Western, and MidCoast Maine. Art Therapists and dedicated support staff drive a colorful van to housing authorities, public schools, libraries, and community centers to provide free Art Therapy sessions for participants ranging in age from 3 to 93 years old. By bringing services directly into the neighborhoods where people live, ArtVan removes financial and transportation barriers, advancing equity and access to mental health and social supports; as well as offering preventative care so that participants may avoid acute care later on.   Concerts on Congress with Tall Heights

  Tall Heights performs a free, all ages outdoor set in the David E. Shaw Sculpture Park Third Thursday. This event is part of Concerts on Congress, presented by The Portland Museum of Art, State Theatre, Friends of Congress Square Park, One Longfellow Square, and Portland Downtown. Visit the PMA galleries while the museum is open late, grab a drink at the outdoor bar, and BYO picnic. Free and open to all. Stop by two other stages: Congress Square Park for Toby McAllister & The Sierra Sounds, and a surprise performance at Monument Square. Karaoke after-party at One Longfellow Square. A moment in New England, a moment on Earth. With their 2024 release, Softly Softly, Paul Wright (cello/vocals) and Tim Harrington (guitar/vocals) reject isolation; both the universal experience of the early 2020s, and its sound recording definition where different instruments are recorded separately. Harrington explains, "The opposite of isolation in recording is bleed, where you hear the drums and guitar through the vocal mic because everything is happening in the same room. It's risky because you can't easily change it later. You're stuck with whatever you get. Bleeding is just the perfect word for it. It's scary and it sometimes hurts."
