Portland, Maine, is a character-rich part of the New England territory, known for its beautiful coastal views, vibrant culinary scene and historical charm. What makes Portland a true gem is its ability to provide a coastal experience without the stress of excessive planning. Whether it’s a morning spent enjoying calm ocean views with a warm pastry, an afternoon dedicated to creative exploration, or a relaxing evening spent transitioning from dinner to the harbor, the city reveals its charm from morning to night. Read on to discover pairings that connect inspiration with discovery.
Where to stroll and savor. Mornings are for exploring and what better way to start your day than in the heart of the Old Port? Complete with Portland charm, cobble stone pathways, farm-to-table delights, local boutiques, shops, galleries and much more, its inviting neighborhood feel will set the tone for your day ahead. If you want to grab a bite to eat with scenic water views, Luke’s Lobster is just steps away. Seafood lovers should order the lobster roll flight or seafood roll flight and let the hardest decision of the day be choosing a favorite. Dessert is non-negotiable so don’t forget to save room.
Where to learn and explore. If you’re interested in a learning expedition, the Portland Museum of Art (PMA) features a diverse collection of American, European and contemporary art, with a particular emphasis on works from Maine that highlight the state’s rich artistic tradition and its artists. The museum also offers a variety of activities, including special members-only events, school tours, family programs, PMA movies and curator talks. For a deeper hands-on experience, EN-NOBLE offers immersive cultural experiences through specialty food tours and live cooking demonstrations led by cultural ambassadors from around the world including Africa, Asia and South America. Going beyond taste testing, the organization prides itself on ensuring guests understand “the stories behind the flavors, the people, and the cultures that make each dish unique.”
Where to shop and dine. Plan a day of shopping at Freeport Village Station Outlets, located about 17 miles outside of the city. The area is easily accessible and walkable, and features a mix of brand-name outlets, local shops, major retailers and the flagship L.L. Bean store, which is currently undergoing a renovation but still open with temporary changes (check online first). After a few hours of retail therapy, head back into the city for the perfect happy hour vibe or a dinner date with just you, your beau or a group at the historic floating restaurant DiMillo’s On the Water. With award-winning cuisine, perfectly crafted cocktails, delicious desserts and panoramic views of the Portland harbor, you can’t go wrong.
Where to see and sip. What’s a trip to the Forest City without a quick visit or photo-op in front of the Portland Head Light, located in Cape Elizabeth’s Fort Williams Park? Commissioned by George Washington in 1791, it is widely recognized as the most photographed lighthouse in the world and continues to be a highlight for locals and tourists drawing in nearly one million visitors each year. Afterwards, especially if it’s a Sunday Funday, head to Batson River Brewing & Distilling for brunch. If it happens to be the last Sunday of the month, you’re in for a real treat: the brewery hosts a lively drag brunch. Consider it a bonus that the gin and vodka are made on site.
Where to stay near local flavor. This is not your typical hotel. The Docent’s Collection is a luxury boutique stay offering concierge service, full kitchen amenities, and spacious accommodations that range from a studio to three-bedroom apartment-style lofts. The Docent’s Collection is known for fusing first-class hospitality with modern, mobile-first service and what most visitors love is that it is within walking distance of bookstores, coffee shops, bars and a local staple, Becky’s Diner on Hobson’s Wharf. But beware, the restaurant does not accept reservations and during the warmer months, it gets jam-packed with lines of eager customers outside the door. If you like a little spice in your food, be sure to try Captain Mowatt’s Canceaux hot sauce. Your taste buds will thank us later.
