PMA Family Day: Sculpture and Movement with Portland Ballet Company

If your kids are like ours, chances are they love dancers, acrobats, and circus performers. The artists in A New American Sculpture, 1914-1945: Lachaise, Laurent, Nadelman, and Zorach* loved them too, and used them for inspiration and as their models, conveying a sense of movement so evocative that one can almost imagine the sculptures coming to life.

This August, we’re taking these ideas to another level, welcoming in the professional dancers of the Portland Ballet Company to share performances inspired by these extraordinary works of art—and better yet, you can even try your hand at sketching the poses of the dancers and the sculptures. It’s an exciting and interactive way to engage with the exhibition that the tiny dancers in your life will love.

All skill levels are welcome and we’ll provide the materials, so bring the kids, bring their friends, and have fun!

*We’ll lead families on a special all-ages gallery tour of the exhibition from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.

*Ballet mini-performances occur at 11:30 a.m., 12:15 p.m., and 1:30 p.m.
