Security Officer

Under the general supervision of the Director of Protection Services and Protection Services Supervisors, responsible for ensuring the security and safety of personnel and visitors, the Portland Museum of Art (PMA) collection, and the physical plant. Performs a variety of security and security-related duties, provides information and assistance to museum visitors, and directs visitors and staff during emergency situations.

Essential Job Functions: 
  • Performs a variety of security and security-related duties, according to established schedules and standard operating procedures, to prevent and deter theft and damage to the collection, exhibitions, and other museum property by the public, staff, and elements.
  • Protects the PMA’s property, visitors, and staff and maintains order by patrolling and/or performing video surveillance of all assigned areas within the PMA and on the PMA grounds to observe, caution, instruct, document, investigate, report, and correct activities.
  • Demonstrates a positive and professional attitude to promote the best of the PMA through responsive and accommodating visitor service, supporting the PMA’s goal of enhancing relationships with constituents.
  • Maintains consistent and alert attention while observing and monitoring all assigned areas and implements the PMA’s security and safety policies to ensure compliance while maintaining a courteous and professional attitude. Operates and monitors security and fire control panel and responds to alarms in accordance with established procedures.
  • Anticipates and promptly responds to emergency situations such as fire, evacuation plan implementation, or employee/visitor injuries, evaluating appropriate courses of action and managing the situation. Coordinates other security and museum personnel for effective security response and orderly evacuation of staff and visitors, and calls in police, ambulance, and fire department as needed.
  • Opens and closes the museum according to established procedures, securing all storage rooms, offices, and buildings, with careful observation to detect potential safety and security hazards, and reports security and maintenance problems to the appropriate staff.
  • Monitors museum entrances and exits, enforcing access and parcel control including issuing and checking staff and visitor identifications, receipt of incoming packages and inspection of packages that leave with visitors or staff, and monitoring activity in the vicinity of entrances and responding as appropriate.
  • Supervises the daily security operations as assigned in the absence of the Director of Protection Services and Protection Services Supervisors.
  • Maintains logs and records of security incidents and observations; completes and files all required reports.
  • Maintains knowledge of the PMA’s precinct for effective response in case of alarms and/or emergencies.
  • Performs other routine protection-services tasks such as key control, control of cash drawers and reserves, and bank deposit delivery.
  • Performs special projects and other related duties as required, directed, or as the situation dictates.
  • Complies with all Portland Museum of Art safety rules and procedures.
  • Regular attendance at the workplace is required.
  • Fosters relationships and builds philanthropy with patrons at the PMA, as defined by displaying behavior that welcomes all individuals contacted in the course of work.
  • Supports the PMA’s strategic goal to advance a culture of inclusivity and diversity.
Supervisory Responsibility: 
May provide general direction and supervision to Gallery Officers, volunteers, and guides.
Education and Experience: 
High School diploma or equivalent with one year of security experience preferred, including customer service experience. CPR and First Aid certification preferred. Valid State of Maine Class C Driver’s License preferred.
Qualifications: 
  • Strong interpersonal and written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to stay calm and focused and to respond effectively during emergencies.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and productively with coworkers.
  • Physical ability for patrolling building and grounds and operating in emergency situations.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.
  • Ability to pass a written proficiency exam after the completion of security and fire systems training.
  • Must be available to work weekends, evenings, overtime, and holidays as needed
Working Conditions: 
  • Work is performed in a museum setting, including working outside in all weather conditions. Work involves regular contact with risky situations and disruptive or aggressive individuals. Occasionally exposed to toxic fumes and loud noises. Work involves extended periods of standing and/or walking and may require lifting and moving of heavy objects. Uses and/or operates various security equipment and devices, including two-way radio, intercom system, camera system, keypads, safe, PA system, and alarm systems. May operate computer and other office equipment.
Terms: 
The Security Officer position is a full-time, non-exempt, hourly, employment-at-will position. The schedule will vary depending on the needs of the museum and will include evenings and weekends
