For Schools: Tours & More

Developing and maintaining an active system of educational programs is a major point of emphasis within the PMA’s mission statement. To that end, the PMA is proud to open its doors to free school tours. With a wide variety of interactive programs for age groups K-12, PMA School Tours blend conversations and inquiry with sketching and writing activities to develop critical thinking and art appreciation. Led by docent educators, the tours are programmed to connect with classroom curriculum and are aligned with the Maine Learning Results.

Free School Tours is made possible by Avangrid Foundation, the Elmina B. Sewall Foundation, Margaret E. Burnham Charitable Trust, Unum, and Susie Konkel.

Cannon Rock Sessions

The Cannon Rock Sessions is a biennial residency program that invites two specialists of different disciplines to come together for a week of discussion on a specific topic. The selected topic is inspired by Winslow Homer’s art, his studio at Prouts Neck, and the role of the Maine landscape in American art, history and identity. The Cannon Rock “visiting minds” spend five days participating in organized discussions and expeditions with community groups around the selected topic, culminating in a public program at the end of the week.

Cannon Rock is supported by the Lunder Homer Education Endowment at the Portland Museum of Art.
