SUMMARY:First Class Mail: A Correspondence in Poetry with Gibson Fay-LeBlanc and Stuart Kestenbaum
DESCRIPTION:Poets Gibson Fay-LeBlanc and Stuart Kestenbaum have been corresponding since December 2024\, sending letters in the form of poems to one another through the US mail. Their letter writing was inspired by an epistolary poetry project developed by Maine Poet Laureate Julia Bouswma that paired Mainers with partners from different parts of the state to exchange poetry letters. The poems could take any form and address any subject matter. While the initial project was scheduled to last for four months\, Kestenbaum and Fay-LeBlanc are continuing to correspond\, addressing topics ranging from family life to the changing seasons to the turbulent state of the world. They’ve been surprised and moved by their investigations\, and look forward to seeing how things look every few weeks from Portland and Deer Isle\, respectively.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nStuart Kestenbaum is the author of six collections of poems\, including most recently Things Seemed to Be Breaking (Deerbrook Editions). He has also written The View from Here (Brynmorgen Press)\, a book of brief essays on craft and community. In 2024\, he and visual artist Susan Webster published A Quiet Book\, collaborations in writing and visual art (Brynmorgen Press). He served as Maine’s poet laureate from 2016–2021 and hosted Poems from Here on Maine Public Radio/Maine Public Classical and was the director of the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle\, Maine for over twenty-five years. More recently\, working with the Libra Foundation\, he designed and implemented a residency program for artists and writers called Monson Arts. Former US poet laureate Ted Kooser has written “Stuart Kestenbaum writes the kind of poems I love to read\, heartfelt responses to the privilege of having been given a life. No hidden agendas here\, no theories to espouse\, nothing but life\, pure life\, set down with craft and love.”  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGibson Fay-LeBlanc is the author of two collections of poems\, including Death of a Ventriloquist\, which won the Vassar Miller Prize\, and Deke Dangle Dive (CavanKerry Press\, 2021). His poems have appeared recently in magazines including Narrative Magazine\, Poetry Northwest\, and Orion\, and a poem was awarded the 2025 Marvin Bell Memorial Poetry Prize by December Magazine and Maggie Smith. He has served as Executive Director of the Maine Writers & Publishers Alliance since 2019 and has previously helped lead community arts organizations including The Telling Room\, SPACE\, and Hewnoaks.

SUMMARY:PMA Films: Days and Nights in the Forest (1970) (New 4K Restoration)
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Satyajit Ray. 116 minutes. Not Rated. In Bengali with English subtitles. \nFeaturing an introduction by Wes Anderson! \nAdapted from Sunil Gangopadhyay’s celebrated 1968 novel\, Days and Nights in the Forest is one of director Satyajit Ray’s greatest achievements\, a modern search for connection that conjures the timeless resonance of a folktale. Desperate to flee Calcutta’s rat race\, four friends — Ashim (Soumitra Chatterjee)\, Sanjoy (Subhendu Chatterjee)\, Hari (Samit Bhanja)\, and Shekhar (Rabi Ghosh) — drive to Palamu\, one of India’s rural “tribal lands\,” where they bribe a watchman into letting them stay at a sylvan guesthouse. Despite vowing to get away from it all\, the crew soon mixes with the locals\, including a woodland family: the soulful yet mischievous Aparna (Sharmila Tagore) takes to the overconfident Ashim\, while her widowed sister-in-law Jaya (Kaberi Bose) grows closer to the bookish Sanjoy. At the same time\, Hari\, fresh off a break-up\, woos a Santal girl named Duli (Simi Garewal); and Shekhar\, despite his own penchant for gambling\, tries to rein in his companions’ boozy hedonism. Filled with some of Ray’s most indelible characterizations and lavish images (shot by longtime cinematographer Soumendu Roy)\, Days and Nights in the Forest touches on masculine vulnerabilities and Indian class divisions with the graceful complexity of a master at his peak.

SUMMARY:PMA Films: Days and Nights in the Forest (1970) (New 4K Restoration) (Free Screening)

SUMMARY:Artist Talk "Precious: The Value of Ornament" with Brian Smith and Lauren Fensterstock
DESCRIPTION:Brian Smith\, United States\, born 1994\, Gay Bar\, 2024. Vintage glass\, plastic\, and stone beads\, chatons\, gemstones\, foam\, adhesive\, and pigment\, 30 x 24 x 10 inches. Brian Smith © Brian Smith. Image courtesy Brian Smith\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Maine-based artists Brian Smith and Lauren Fensterstock for a conversation about their work in Precious: The Value of Ornament. \n\n\n\nBoth artists work sculpturally\, using intricate materials like beads\, glass\, and crystal to explore profound themes through the language of ornament. Smith’s Gay Bar (2024) bejewels a conch shell to reflect on queer sanctuary and resilience\, while Fensterstock’s When a Third Sun (2021) renders a sun in glass and quartz to meditate on impermanence and destruction.  \n\n\n\nTogether\, their works invite us to consider how beauty and meaning are bound up in the materials and processes we use to make sense of the world.

SUMMARY:PMA Films: Yes
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Nadav Lapid. 149 minutes. Not Rated. In Hebrew with English subtitles. \nOne of international cinema’s most fearless and provocative filmmakers\, Nadav Lapid has long been an outspoken critic of his birth country’s government policies\, channeling a lifetime of fury and frustration into vital films like Synonyms and Ahed’s Knee that brim with righteous anger\, spite\, and shame. In Yes\, Lapid once again takes vigorous critical aim at the Israeli government with a new approach: submission. In the days following October 7\, Y.\, a jazz musician\, and his wife Yasmine\, a dancer\, resolve to say yes to everything. Y. and Yasmine sell their bodies and souls to the highest bidder\, surrendering themselves and their art to Israel’s social\, political and military elite. Soon\, Y. is entrusted with a mission of the utmost importance: to compose the music for a rousing\, ruthless new national anthem. Feverishly whirling between moments of satire\, sincerity\, and complete submission\, Yes is a visceral\, blistering indictment of modern Israel\, and an essential addition to post-October 7 cinema.

Her nightly newsletter\, Letters from an American\, reaches over six million readers.Heather’s award-winning books span subjects from the Civil War and Reconstruction to the Gilded Age\, the American West and the history of the Republican Party through the Trump administration. She is the author\, most recently\, of the best-selling Democracy Awakening: Notes on the State of America. Jane Mayer has called the book “a vibrant\, and essential history of America’s unending\, enraging and utterly compelling struggle since its founding to live up to its own best ideals.”She hosts a video series\, Journey to American Democracy\, which streams on YouTube and Instagram. Her articles and reviews have been published in the Washington Post\, the New York Times\, and The Guardian\, among other outlets. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE FILM In Women Laughing\, longtime New Yorker cartoonist Liza Donnelly sets out to explore her lifelong passion for women’s humor and cartooning by speaking\, laughing\, and drawing with a diverse group of remarkable women who create cartoons for the iconic magazine. Inspired by her acclaimed book Very Funny Ladies and Liza’s own biography\, the film looks at how far women have come in a field historically dominated by men. Women Laughing includes intimate conversations with some of the most celebrated and groundbreaking cartoonists at The New Yorker including Roz Chast\, Emily Flake\, Sarah Akinterinwa\, Liana Fink\, Amy Hwang\, and Bishakh Som. Liza also speaks with Emma Allen\, the magazine’s first female cartoon editor. During a dynamic group roundtable discussion with ten cartoonists\, we also meet artists Emily Sanders Hopkins\, Maggie Larson\, Arenza Pena-Popo and Victoria Roberts.  \n\n\n\nTogether\, they reflect on what drives them\, the obstacles they’ve faced\, their creative processes\, and much more. The film also journeys back in time to the earliest days of The New Yorker\, a magazine founded in 1925 by journalists Harold Ross and Jane Grant. Surprisingly\, the very first issue featured a cartoon by a woman\, Brooklyn native Ethel Plummer. And there were several other women drawing in those early days. Women Laughing features some of their pioneering work and reveals that by the 1950s women cartoonists had all but disappeared from the magazine\, not significantly returning until the late 1970s. A hundred years since its founding\, the cartoons of The New Yorker remain the benchmark of the form\, beloved around the world. And the magazine has seen tremendous progress. Today half of the artists identify as female or non-binary\, and many more people of color are joining the community\, bringing cartoons to new audiences. Women Laughing offers a unique look at how women cartoonists\, past and present\, have used single panel drawings to express their lived experiences. The film is ultimately a joyful celebration of women\, art\, and the creative spirit.  The annual Bernard Osher Lecture Series is made possible by the Peggy and Harold Osher Endowment at the Portland Museum of Art. Since 1988\, the Bernard Osher Lecture Series has been the PMA’s flagship annual event\, welcoming visionary cultural leaders\, scholars\, and thinkers to Maine to share their insights and experiences with museum audiences.

In Icelandic and English with English subtitles. \nWhen 90% of Iceland’s women walked off their jobs and out of their homes one morning in 1975\, they brought the nation to a standstill and ignited a revolution that would shape Iceland into a global leader in gender equality today. Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Women’s Day Off\, the film tells this inspiring story for the first time through the voices of the strikers themselves. Blending firsthand testimony\, playful animation\, and a rousing theme song by Björk\, The Day Iceland Stood Still revisits an extraordinary act of civil disobedience whose lessons are urgently relevant in today’s worldwide struggles for equality and collective power.
