SUMMARY:Champlain Film Festival: The Stranger/L'Étranger
DESCRIPTION:Directed by François Ozon. 122 minutes. Not Rated. In French with English subtitles. \nMeursault is a detached and indifferent Frenchman in French Algeria\, who\, weeks after his mother’s funeral\, kills an unnamed Arab man in Algiers. The ensuing trial explores both the crime and his character. It is considered a landmark work of existentialism and is widely regarded as Camus’s masterpiece. This adaptation of Camus’ most famous work is enriched by the stunning cinematography: every scene is a work of cinematic mastery and the black and white film adds to the visual richness. \nBased on Albert Camus’ 1942 novella\, one of the most widely read French novels in the world\, and translated into 75 languages.

SUMMARY:PMA Films: The Work in Progress (with filmmaker Ian Cheney)
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Ian Cheney. 100 minutes (followed by discussion). Not Rated. In English. \n\n\n\nThis screening will be followed by a discussion with director Ian Cheney. \n\n\n\nIf you were invited to sit at a table with someone you’ve never met before and answer handwritten questions from a wooden box about the state of America\, would you run the other way? The Work in Progress invites strangers from across generations and geographies to engage in candid discussions about America’s ever-evolving democracy\, identity\, and definitions of community — and where the heck we go from here. Guided by questions posed by Executive Producer Robert Reich\, participants sit down in a series of conversations with one another to explore the country they’re living in now and the one they still believe is possible. \n\n\n\nThese encounters are intercut with portraits of Americans at work — in woodshops\, laboratories\, fields\, board rooms\, recording studios\, theaters\, and beyond. The message is simple but profound: America can work because\, in many ways\, it’s already working. And a central part of the work ahead is to reclaim the practices of dialogue\, debate\, compromise\, and perhaps most importantly\, listening\, so that we might find our footing again. \n\n\n\nWhat emerges in The Work in Progress is an unusual and provocative glimpse of America in its 250th year\, and an invitation to all Americans to pull up a chair\, invite a stranger\, and lend an ear.

SUMMARY:PMA Films: The Innocents (1961)
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Jack Clayton. 100 minutes. Not Rated. In English. \nBased on Henry James’ The Turn of the Screw\, with a screenplay co-written by In Cold Blood’s Truman Capote\, The Innocents stars Deborah Kerr (From Here to Eternity) as Miss Giddens\, the newly appointed governess for a pair of orphaned children. With their uncle (Michael Redgrave) completely disinterested in his wards\, Giddens witnesses a series of unsettling events that leads her to believe that their house is haunted\, and the children possessed. Or is it all in her head? Set during the late Victorian period and shot on location in a Gothic mansion in the south of England\, The Innocents has earned a deserved reputation as one of the scariest films of all time—an opinion notably shared by Martin Scorsese.

SUMMARY:PMA Films x Points North: The Illusion of an Everlasting Summer
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Alessandra Sanguinetti. 93 minutes. Not Rated. In Spanish with English subtitles. \n\n\n\nPMA Films is delighted to partner with Points North on a trio of screenings November 6–7\, featuring highlights from this year’s Camden International Film Festival. \n\n\n\nWhat does a twenty-five year friendship look like? This film compresses time to reveal its patterns. Guilermina and Bellinda are two cousins growing up in the rural Argentine Pampas. At first\, the camera opens a space for their games and fantasies; later\, it follows their journeys from girlhood to womanhood. What emerges is a tender portrait exploring the relationship between time and human connection.

SUMMARY:PMA Films x Points North: Boatbuilders
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Luke Lorentzen. 103 minutes. Not Rated. In English. \n\n\n\nPMA Films is delighted to partner with Points North on a trio of screenings November 6–7\, featuring highlights from this year’s Camden International Film Festival. \n\n\n\nAcross four seasons\, the skilled craftspeople of Maine’s Brooklin Boat Yard meticulously transform planks of Douglas fir\, mahogany\, and cedar into a 56-foot wooden sailboat—both a fading\, time-honored tradition and a delicate business to manage.
