Clarence H. White and His World: The Art and Craft of Photography, 1895–1925

Clarence H. White and His World: The Art and Craft of Photography, 1895–1925

Exhibition details available here.

The pure beauty of the images that are on view in this exhibition makes a really important claim for Clarence H. White as a master practitioner and a leader of the early-20th-century movement called Pictorialism. The works are incredibly lush. When you see them in person, there is a richness that you just can't get in a publication.

Anne McCauley, David H. McAlpin Professor of the History of Photography and Modern Art, Department of Art and Archaeology, Princeton University, and a Scholar of White, has organized a tremendous exhibition, featuring everything from White’s own photographs to pamphlets from shows he organized, to albums of student work, to photographs by his Photo-Secessionist and Pictorialist peers. The PMA welcomes Director's Circle and Contemporaries Council members to a distinct evening with a special lecture and reception.

R.S.V.P. by June 12 to Ashleigh Hill at (207) 494-5346 or ahill@portlandmuseum.org.
