SUMMARY:PMA Films: Steal This Story\, Please!
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Carl Deal and Tia Lessin. 98 minutes. Not Rated. In English. \nUndeterred by armed soldiers\, smooth-talking politicians\, and riot police\, journalist Amy Goodman has reported some of the most consequential stories of our time. Steal This Story\, Please! is a gripping portrait of the trailblazer whose unwavering commitment to truth-telling spans three decades of turbulent history. From the frontlines of global conflicts to the organized chaos of her daily news show Democracy Now!\, Goodman broadcasts stories and voices routinely silenced by commercial media. \nOscar-nominated filmmakers Carl Deal and Tia Lessin (Trouble the Water\, The Janes) take us behind the scenes with the warm\, wisecracking granddaughter of an Orthodox rabbi — raised in a tradition of asking hard questions – as she navigates a news landscape reshaped by technology\, corporate consolidation\, and political assaults on truth itself. Urgent\, provocative and unexpectedly funny\, Steal This Story\, Please! is both a call to action and a celebration of resistance\, posing the question: what happens to democracy when the press surrenders to power?

SUMMARY:PMA Films: Silent Friend
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Ildikó Enyedi. 147 minutes. Not Rated. In English\, German\, and Cantonese with English subtitles. \nOn the grounds of a medieval German university town looms an imposing Ginkgo biloba\, a tree whose longevity stands in marked contrast to three intimate\, human-scaled stories. In 1908\, the university’s first female student gains admission into the prestigious botany department\, confronting the sexism of both professors and peers. In 1972\, amidst counterculture movements\, a reserved student finds his attention captured by a fellow housemate and the geranium plant she studies. In 2020\, during the COVID-19 pandemic\, a neuroscientist from Hong Kong secures the help of a renowned botanist for an experiment on the old ginkgo tree.

SUMMARY:Juneteenth Lecture: "Portland’s Historic Black Community and the Underground Railroad"
DESCRIPTION:Using works from the PMA collection\, alongside stories drawn from the Portland Freedom Trail\, historian Seth Goldstein explores Portland’s 19th-century Black community and its role in assisting self-emancipators traveling north following the passage of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. The lecture highlights the history of Munjoy Hill\, the Abyssinian Meeting House\, and the maritime networks that connected Portland to the Underground Railroad. \n  \nAbout Seth Goldstein Seth Goldstein received his bachelor’s degree in European History from the University of California at Santa Cruz and his master’s degree in World History from Northeastern University. His research interests include the historic North Atlantic fishery\, global piracy\, New England shipwrecks and lighthouses\, the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the Vietnam War era counterculture. He is a member of the Atlantic Black Project; a grass roots non-profit that examines Maine and New England’s marginalized history and the regions complicity with the economics of enslavement. Seth is the Director of the Cushing’s Point Museum at Bug Light Park and is the Director of Development for the South Portland Historical Society.

SUMMARY:PMA Films: Bless Their Little Hearts (1983) (Free Screening)
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Billy Woodberry. 80 minutes. Rated R. In English. \nA key masterpiece of the L.A Rebellion\, Bless Their Little Hearts distills the social concerns and aesthetics of that trailblazing movement in African American cinema. Billy Woodberry’s film showcases his attentive eye\, sensitivity to the nuances of community and family\, and the power of the blues. \nSearching for steady work\, Charlie Banks (Nate Hardman) views his chronic unemployment as a kind of spiritual trial. But day work and selling a few catfish can’t sustain a family of five. While his wife\, Andais (Kaycee Moore)\, works to support them with dignity\, Charlie finds comfort for his wounded sense of manhood in an affair that threatens his marriage and family. \nAt the heart of this devastatingly beautiful film is the couple’s agonizing confrontation – shot in one continuous ten-minute take – that ranks as “one of the great domestic cataclysms of modern movies.” (Richard Brody\, The New Yorker) \nNamed to the National Film Registry\, Bless Their Little Hearts features contributions by two iconic American artists: Charles Burnett (Killer of Sheep\, To Sleep With Anger)\, who wrote and shot the film\, and Kaycee Moore (Daughters of the Dust)\, whose powerful performance as Andais Banks remains a revelation.

SUMMARY:PMA Films: Exhibition on Screen: Turner & Constable
DESCRIPTION:Directed by David Bickerstaff. 93 minutes. Not Rated. In English. \nCelebrating the 250th anniversary of their births\, this unmissable new documentary explores Turner and Constable’s intertwined lives and legacies alongside the groundbreaking Tate exhibition. \nTwo of Britain’s greatest painters\, J.M.W. Turner and John Constable were also the greatest of rivals. Born within a year of each other\, both used landscape painting to reflect the changing world around them. Now\, these two greats are reuniting. Tate Britain is bringing these two greats together for a groundbreaking exhibition\, in London from November 2025 to April 2026\, and Exhibition on Screen once again has exclusive and privileged access to bring their extraordinary art and remarkable stories to the big screen in March so that you can enjoy both film and exhibition together. Discover unexpected sides to both artists with intimate views of sketchbooks and personal items and insights from leading experts. \nTurner’s blazing sunsets and sublime scenes from his travels and Constable’s idealised depictions of beloved places from home whipped the public of the time into a frenzy of enthusiasm. Constable represents the very best of the old school of realism and pastoral nostalgia; Turner\, an exciting new way of depicting emotion and dreamlike impressions. Critics compared their starkly different styles to a clash of ‘fire and water’. Don’t miss this opportunity to see these greats side-by-side\, as they so often were in life\, on the big screen for the first time.

SUMMARY:PMA Films: The Currents
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Milagros Mumenthaler. 104 minutes. Not Rated. In Spanish with English subtitles. \nWhile visiting Switzerland to accept an award for her work in the fashion industry\, Argentinian designer Lina (Isabel Aimé González Sola) is seized by the sudden urge to jump off a bridge into an icy river. She survives the plunge and returns to Buenos Aires; she tells no one of the incident\, yet a transformation has taken place within her. Left with a paralyzing fear of water\, Lina finds it impossible to readjust to her former identity as a wife\, mother\, and artist. She distances herself from her husband (Esteban Bigliardi) and career\, growing increasingly isolated and fragile as she confronts long buried existential questions. Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Milagros Mumenthaler\, The Currents is a quietly gripping psychological mystery with dreamlike\, hallucinatory threads that weave a portrait of a woman on the verge of unraveling.

SUMMARY:PMA Book Club
DESCRIPTION:OPEN TO MEMBERS ONLY \n\n\n\nLove art and books?\n\n\n\nJoin the PMA Book Club—open to PMA members and meeting quarterly for in-person conversations that explore the connections between literature\, creativity\, and culture. No prior art knowledge needed.  \n\n\n\nThis June\, Julia Keiser will lead our book club conversation surrounding Winslow Homer: American Passage here at the PMA. \n\n\n\nSpace is limited\, please register online \n\n\n\nPurchase a copy at the PMA Store\, Members get 10% Off! \n\n\n\nHomer’s pictures cast a wide and deep appeal\, yet few facts were known of the life of the man behind the art until Cross’s biography was published by Farrar\, Straus and Giroux in April 2022. The story of Homer’s life illuminates the stories embedded in his art and the stories of our own times. Homer’s art and life relate closely to the struggles of today. As people of all races\, ages and places look together at our shared visual heritage\, we may find new ways to understand one another and ourselves.  \n\n\n\nIf you have questions about book club and membership at the PMA you are welcome to reach out to our Annual Gifts Officer\, Lily Spearsmith\, at lspearsmith@portlandmuseum.org or (207) 318‑2055. \n\n\n\nWe look forward to discussing Winslow Homer: American Passage with you! \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nWilliam R. Cross \n\n\n\nBill Cross believes that all people need stories. He is now working on a second biography\, of the design impresario Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933). Cross is Chair of the Advisory Board for the Yale Center for Faith and Culture\, and President of Citizens’ Initiative for Manchester Affordable Housing (dba Citizens by the Sea). For more than three decades he managed investment teams and investment portfolios\, while also writing\, researching and lecturing on art\, faith and history. A Chartered Financial Analyst\, he was a Scholar of the House at Yale College\, from which he graduated magna cum laude. He also earned an MBA from Harvard Business School. SUMMARY:PMA Films: The Day Iceland Stood Still (with panel discussion)
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Pamela Hogan. 70 minutes (followed by panel discussion). Not Rated. In Icelandic and English with English subtitles. \nWhen 90% of Iceland’s women walked off their jobs and out of their homes one morning in 1975\, they brought the nation to a standstill and ignited a revolution that would shape Iceland into a global leader in gender equality today. Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Women’s Day Off\, the film tells this inspiring story for the first time through the voices of the strikers themselves. Blending firsthand testimony\, playful animation\, and a rousing theme song by Björk\, The Day Iceland Stood Still revisits an extraordinary act of civil disobedience whose lessons are urgently relevant in today’s worldwide struggles for equality and collective power.
