SUMMARY:Lecture: The History That Inspired Homer
DESCRIPTION:Delve deeper into Winslow Homer: Painter\, Etcher through the maritime traditions and historic events that inspired some of the artist’s most celebrated works. This illustrated lecture explores the perilous North Atlantic fishery\, the Civil War\, and other powerful influences reflected in some of Homer’s most iconic paintings and etchings. Presented by historian Seth Goldstein. \nSeth Goldstein is a historian whose work explores maritime history and New England’s overlooked past. Raised on Cape Cod\, he developed an early interest in maritime culture before earning a bachelor’s degree in European History from the University of California\, Santa Cruz\, and a master’s degree in World History from Northeastern University. \nGoldstein has taught at the University of New England\, Southern Maine Community College\, and the Maine College of Art & Design. He is affiliated with the Atlantic Black Box Project\, a Portland-based nonprofit dedicated to researching and sharing New England’s marginalized histories. His research and writing have been featured in exhibitions at the Portland Museum of Art\, the Maine Historical Society\, and the Maine Maritime Museum. He currently serves as Development and Museum Director for the South Portland Historical Society.
