SUMMARY:PMA Films: Days and Nights in the Forest (1970) (New 4K Restoration) (Free Screening)
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Satyajit Ray. 116 minutes. Not Rated. In Bengali with English subtitles. \nFeaturing an introduction by Wes Anderson! \nAdapted from Sunil Gangopadhyay’s celebrated 1968 novel\, Days and Nights in the Forest is one of director Satyajit Ray’s greatest achievements\, a modern search for connection that conjures the timeless resonance of a folktale. Desperate to flee Calcutta’s rat race\, four friends — Ashim (Soumitra Chatterjee)\, Sanjoy (Subhendu Chatterjee)\, Hari (Samit Bhanja)\, and Shekhar (Rabi Ghosh) — drive to Palamu\, one of India’s rural “tribal lands\,” where they bribe a watchman into letting them stay at a sylvan guesthouse. Despite vowing to get away from it all\, the crew soon mixes with the locals\, including a woodland family: the soulful yet mischievous Aparna (Sharmila Tagore) takes to the overconfident Ashim\, while her widowed sister-in-law Jaya (Kaberi Bose) grows closer to the bookish Sanjoy. At the same time\, Hari\, fresh off a break-up\, woos a Santal girl named Duli (Simi Garewal); and Shekhar\, despite his own penchant for gambling\, tries to rein in his companions’ boozy hedonism. Filled with some of Ray’s most indelible characterizations and lavish images (shot by longtime cinematographer Soumendu Roy)\, Days and Nights in the Forest touches on masculine vulnerabilities and Indian class divisions with the graceful complexity of a master at his peak.

SUMMARY:little house dance - Second Performance
DESCRIPTION:little house presents its second performance of their three-month PMA residency.little house has developed elements of their current research\, including excerpts of ALPHA MARE a new choreographic work exploring practices of mourning in the nonhuman animal world and interspecies connection. These performances will be developed in direct response to the PMA’s architecture and spaces\, with each performance offering audiences an opportunity to encounter the evolving process. This residency emphasizes research\, site-responsive practice\, and ongoing engagement with the public.About little house dance:Founded by Heather Stewart (she/they) in 2020\, little house is a professional dance company established on principles of democratic process\, collaboration\, sustainability\, and high caliber dance performance in service of a strong arts ecosystem in Maine. After several years of working as an independent artist Heather established little house in order to formalize her collaborative relationships with other dancers\, musicians\, visual artists\, and writers. As an organization\, little house exists to challenge the notion that quality dance can only arise in cities that have already been categorized as designated dance hubs.FMI visit littlehousedance.comInstagram @littlehousedance

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: "Precious: The Value of Ornament" with Brian Smith and Lauren Fensterstock
DESCRIPTION:Brian Smith\, United States\, born 1994\, Gay Bar\, 2024. Vintage glass\, plastic\, and stone beads\, chatons\, gemstones\, foam\, adhesive\, and pigment\, 30 x 24 x 10 inches. Brian Smith © Brian Smith. Image courtesy Brian Smith\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin Maine-based artists Brian Smith and Lauren Fensterstock for a conversation about their work in Precious: The Value of Ornament. \n\n\n\nBoth artists work sculpturally\, using intricate materials like beads\, glass\, and crystal to explore profound themes through the language of ornament. Smith’s Gay Bar (2024) bejewels a conch shell to reflect on queer sanctuary and resilience\, while Fensterstock’s When a Third Sun (2021) renders a sun in glass and quartz to meditate on impermanence and destruction.  \n\n\n\nTogether\, their works invite us to consider how beauty and meaning are bound up in the materials and processes we use to make sense of the world.

SUMMARY:PMA Films: Yes
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Nadav Lapid. 149 minutes. Not Rated. In Hebrew with English subtitles. \nOne of international cinema’s most fearless and provocative filmmakers\, Nadav Lapid has long been an outspoken critic of his birth country’s government policies\, channeling a lifetime of fury and frustration into vital films like Synonyms and Ahed’s Knee that brim with righteous anger\, spite\, and shame. In Yes\, Lapid once again takes vigorous critical aim at the Israeli government with a new approach: submission. In the days following October 7\, Y.\, a jazz musician\, and his wife Yasmine\, a dancer\, resolve to say yes to everything. Y. and Yasmine sell their bodies and souls to the highest bidder\, surrendering themselves and their art to Israel’s social\, political and military elite. Soon\, Y. is entrusted with a mission of the utmost importance: to compose the music for a rousing\, ruthless new national anthem. Feverishly whirling between moments of satire\, sincerity\, and complete submission\, Yes is a visceral\, blistering indictment of modern Israel\, and an essential addition to post-October 7 cinema.

Her articles and reviews have been published in the Washington Post\, the New York Times\, and The Guardian\, among other outlets. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE FILM In Women Laughing\, longtime New Yorker cartoonist Liza Donnelly sets out to explore her lifelong passion for women’s humor and cartooning by speaking\, laughing\, and drawing with a diverse group of remarkable women who create cartoons for the iconic magazine. Inspired by her acclaimed book Very Funny Ladies and Liza’s own biography\, the film looks at how far women have come in a field historically dominated by men. Women Laughing includes intimate conversations with some of the most celebrated and groundbreaking cartoonists at The New Yorker including Roz Chast\, Emily Flake\, Sarah Akinterinwa\, Liana Fink\, Amy Hwang\, and Bishakh Som. Liza also speaks with Emma Allen\, the magazine’s first female cartoon editor. During a dynamic group roundtable discussion with ten cartoonists\, we also meet artists Emily Sanders Hopkins\, Maggie Larson\, Arenza Pena-Popo and Victoria Roberts.  \n\n\n\nTogether\, they reflect on what drives them\, the obstacles they’ve faced\, their creative processes\, and much more. The film also journeys back in time to the earliest days of The New Yorker\, a magazine founded in 1925 by journalists Harold Ross and Jane Grant. Surprisingly\, the very first issue featured a cartoon by a woman\, Brooklyn native Ethel Plummer. And there were several other women drawing in those early days. Women Laughing features some of their pioneering work and reveals that by the 1950s women cartoonists had all but disappeared from the magazine\, not significantly returning until the late 1970s. A hundred years since its founding\, the cartoons of The New Yorker remain the benchmark of the form\, beloved around the world. And the magazine has seen tremendous progress. Today half of the artists identify as female or non-binary\, and many more people of color are joining the community\, bringing cartoons to new audiences. Women Laughing offers a unique look at how women cartoonists\, past and present\, have used single panel drawings to express their lived experiences. The film is ultimately a joyful celebration of women\, art\, and the creative spirit.  The annual Bernard Osher Lecture Series is made possible by the Peggy and Harold Osher Endowment at the Portland Museum of Art. Since 1988\, the Bernard Osher Lecture Series has been the PMA’s flagship annual event\, welcoming visionary cultural leaders\, scholars\, and thinkers to Maine to share their insights and experiences with museum audiences.

DESCRIPTION:Join The Maine Outdoor Film Festival\, The Maine Seaweed Council and The Maine Farmed Seafood Coalition and kick off Maine Seaweed Week with an evening of short films followed by a panel discussion.\nDoors: 6PM\, Film: 6:15PM Panel Discussion: 6:45PM \nTickets available here: maineoutdoorfilmfestival.com/maines-seaweed-moment/ \nFILM PROGRAM – Several short films about seaweed including the *Maine Premiere* of:  \nMAINE’S SEAWEED MOMENT  | 6.97 minutes | by No Umbrella Media | United States | Short synopsis: Maine’s Seaweed Moment follows seaweed farmers Nathan and Natalie Johnson\, diving into their world to demonstrate how farmed seaweed can revitalize Maine’s working coastline\, improve local ocean habitats\, and diversify its economy. The film explores the qualities that make seaweed a conservation solution and a valuable product\, and how expanding farmed seaweed markets can help address local and widespread challenges. \n\nPANEL DISCUSSION – How seaweed can be a key contributor to the blue bioeconomy through a diversity of products\, in Maine and beyond. \n\nModerator – Nichole Price  – Senior Research Scientist\, Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences. Nichole Price is a benthic marine ecologist with interest in how global change phenomena\, like ocean acidification and warming\, can alter bottom-dwelling species interactions\, community dynamics\, and ecosystem function in shallow coastal regimes. Her work focuses primarily on the eco-physiology of seaweeds and calcifying invertebrates and their current and future role in dissolved inorganic carbon and nutrient cycling. Nichole utilizes state-of-the-art analytical tools including prototype autonomous oceanographic instrument packages in field campaigns\, develops custom experimental aquaria in the lab\, and applies emerging technological approaches (like environmental DNA) to tackle fundamental ecological research questions about population dynamics\, biological feedbacks\, and ecosystem services. Nichole also applies her expertise to explore mitigation strategies for coastal acidification (the ‘Halo’ effect) and climate change (e.g.\, blue carbon and uses of farmed seaweeds). She has focused on these topics primarily on tropical coral reefs and temperate systems and extrapolates her results from each biome to regional and global scales using statistical modeling. \nBailey Moritz – World Wildlife Fund Lead Expert. As the lead specialist for Seaweed and Shellfish Farming on the WWF-US Aquaculture team\, Bailey supports the seaweed industry in reducing barriers to growth and advancement for climate gains. Her current region of focus is the Eastern Pacific to the North Atlantic. She oversees grants to community organizations and research institutes focused on projects ranging from the ecosystem services of seaweed and shellfish farming to installing demonstration farms in new communities. She develops workshops aimed at driving new markets for seaweed\, including as a livestock feed and alternative packaging material\, bringing together stakeholders across the respective value chains. \nNate Johnson – Seaweed Farmer. Nate was raised\, and continues to live\, on Long Island in Casco Bay\, Maine. His family has lived and fished from the islands of Casco Bay for hundreds of years. Professionally he is involved multiple aspects of sustainable development in the blue economy sector – including underwater renewable power systems\, aquaculture and commercial fishing. In 2015 \, Nate established Shearwater Ventures as an early mover in the kelp farming industry. He served on the Boards of the Island Institute and Maine Fishermen’s Forum\, the advisory committee for Maine SeaGrant\, and as a member of the State of Maine’s Blue Economy Task Force. \nJaclyn Robidoux – Maine Sea Grant. As a member of the Marine Extension Team\, Jaclyn focuses on the development of the seaweed sector in Maine\, with an emphasis on sustainable production\, post-harvest processing\, and product development. Her work provides support for coastal communities through outreach education\, technology transfer programs\, and by coordinating stakeholders around Maine’s seaweed resources. Jaclyn’s background in technical seaweed aquaculture research helps to link ongoing applied research with industry capacity and opportunities\, to foster robust and sustainable working waterfronts along Maine’s coast. \n*panel subject to change. \nMaine Seaweed Week is a statewide food and drink celebration featuring seaweed-inspired dishes\, cocktails\, and special events at restaurants\, bars\, breweries\, and businesses across Maine. Brought to you by Maine’s seaweed experts\, the week includes chef-crafted menus\, tastings\, and hands-on experiences that highlight the importance of seaweed to Maine’s people and coast. SUMMARY:Maine Jewish Film Festival: Mazel Tov
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Adrián Suar. 97 minutes. Not Rated. In Spanish with English subtitles.\n\nFollowed by opening night reception. When Dario Roitman returns from the U.S. to Argentina for a family wedding and Bat Mitzvah\, he anticipates the usual family drama. But his carefully laid plans for a family reunion are suddenly upended when he learns\, just hours before his flight\, that his father has passed away. As the Roitmans gather for the funeral\, old wounds resurface and longstanding tensions reach a boiling point. Despite the emotional turmoil\, Dario remains determined to celebrate both the wedding and Bat Mitzvah\, even if it means challenging tradition and risking further discord. Navigating grief\, sibling rivalry\, and delightfully eccentric grudges\, the Roitmans reveal the messy yet enduring love of family.

SUMMARY:Maine Jewish Film Festival: We Met at Grossinger's
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Paula Eiselt. 104 minutes. Not Rated. In English. \nWe Met at Grossinger’s is an immersive journey through the Jewish Catskills—once known as the Borscht Belt—reviving the iconic resort that inspired Dirty Dancing and defined an era of Jewish American life. \nThroughout decades of prejudice stifling the integration of Jewish immigrants in America\, the Borscht Belt in the Catskills provided an oasis of belonging\, and Grossinger’s Resort and Hotel was the crown jewel. The real-life inspiration for the setting of the 1987 classic film Dirty Dancing\, Grossinger’s provided both a physical and mental getaway where Jews—and others from marginalized communities—needing a break from NYC could relax. \nThe resort’s growing reputation attracted a wide variety of comedians\, athletes\, and political figures\, including Mel Brooks\, Jerry Seinfeld\, Jackie Robinson and Eleanor Roosevelt. Filmmaker Paula Eiselt resurrects this vanished world with an immersive warmth\, providing a timely reminder of the historic richness of Jewish culture and its immeasurable contributions to American life.
