Introducing Jaime DeSimone: Associate Curator of Contemporary Art

We're thrilled to introduce to our members Jaime DeSimone, our new Associate Curator of Contemporary Art. DeSimone joins the PMA from the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) Jacksonville, where she helped grow the permanent collection and curated the Project Atrium series as well as featured exhibitions, including a 2018 exhibition with deep Maine ties, A Dark Place of Dreams: Louise Nevelson with Chakaia Booker, Lauren Fensterstock, and Kate Gilmore. DeSimone began her new role at the PMA on July 16.

Prior to MOCA Jacksonville, DeSimone served as Exhibitions Project Manager at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts. From 2005 to 2012, DeSimone was the Assistant Curator at the Addison Gallery of American
Art in Andover, Massachusetts. She holds a master’s degree in American contemporary art from American University and a bachelor’s degree in art history from Bates College.

At the PMA, DeSimone will oversee the contemporary art holdings in the PMA collection, including new acquisitions, and develop original exhibitions. Among her initial responsibilities will be overseeing Relational Undercurrents: Contemporary Art of the Caribbean Archipelago, a major exhibition organized by the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach, California which will be on view at the PMA from February 1, 2019, through May 5, 2019.

We can’t wait to share the ways in which Jaime will interpret and add to the PMA’s contemporary art collection, and look for her at a panel discussion, curator talk, or gallery talk soon!

“It is an honor to join the PMA’s curatorial team and play a role in shaping the cultural fabric
of the community. I am very excited to return to Maine, where my passion for art history blossomed, and build upon the existing successes of the PMA’s contemporary art program.
I look forward to developing strong relationships throughout the state to serve as a conduit for members, colleagues, artists, and organizations alike."
Jaime DeSimone
