Behind the Scenes tour of the Kotzschmar Organ

One of only two municipal organs in the U.S., Portland's Kotzschmar Organ, located in Merrill Auditorium, is so impressive that you need to see it up close to believe it. This versatile instrument has 330 keys, more than 7,000 pipes, and is the only instrument in Maine that you can stand inside of with dozens of your friends. Get an inside look at one of the greatest pipe organs in the world with this special event, and discover how the Kotzschmar came to live in Portland, while enjoying cocktails on the Merrill stage.

The Art of Beermaking with Bissell Brothers Brewing Company

If you’ve been to the beer aisle at the grocer’s recently, you’ve seen a whole gallery worth of eclectic art and design on the cans and labels. But who are the artists that create this colorful work for these breweries? Bissell Brothers Brewing invites PMA Contemporaries to their tasting room on Thompson’s Point to meet some of the artists who have created the work shown on their cans, tasting room, and promotional materials. Naturally, you’ll also be encouraged to sample the latest and finest beers on tap, and Locally Sauced will be on hand to offer light fare.

Contemporaries Council Sunset Soiree

The PMA invites Contemporaries Council members to an evening reception at the Winslow Homer Studio. Drinks and light fare will be served.

Summer Garden Party with the Director’s Circle and Contemporaries

Mark your calendars now for the annual summer garden lawn party at the PMA. Spend a magical evening out with the PMA community in the David E. Shaw and Family Sculpture Park, strung with lights and full of live music and excellent company. The Black Tie Company is on hand to offer hors d’oeuvres and open bar, so join Director’s Circle and Contemporaries members for the largest PMA event of the summer.  

Speedwell Projects Artist Reception

Portland Artist Tonee Harbert's surreal photographs capture the connection between the landscape and its people. Harbert states "This work is not an expose on humans’ misuse of the landscape, but more a reflection on our environment and our relationship to it." Contemporaries members are invited join Tonee Harbert and SPEEDWELL projects for a special reception where Tonee will give a short talk on his works on view and process.  Hors d’oeuvres and refreshments will be served.

The PMA Goes to NYC

Kick off the Friends of the Collection’s 2019 fundraising efforts—with a particular eye toward the museum’s purchase of David Driskell’s powerful Ghetto Wall #2—and join the PMA on a trip to New York City that includes special tours of museums, private collections, and artist studios. Judy and Leonard Lauder Director Mark Bessire, Deputy Director and Robert and Elizabeth Nanovic Chief Curator Jessica May, Deputy Director and Director of External Affairs Lizzy Jones are among the PMA representatives who will join you for this three-day excursion.
