Focus Tours are engaging and interactive guided tours featuring themes related to the elementary curriculum. Simply choose the tour that best fits your curriculum and type the Focus Tour title in the message box of the online tour request form. Grade level suggestions are listed for each Focus Tour, but you may choose the topic that best suits your needs, and our docents will tailor the tour accordingly. Kindergarten and First Grade
Track creatures, wild and tame, on this fun adventure for young children. Students will explore colors and shapes while finding exotic, familiar, and fanciful animals in a variety of natural and imaginative settings.

Let’s Face It!
First and Second Grades
Explore how ideas of self, identity, and community are expressed through painted and sculpted portraits. Meet famous and everyday people from a variety of time periods and see how different art styles capture their character and emotions.

A Look Inside the McLellan House
Third and Fourth Grades
Discover Maine and Portland’s past by experiencing the splendor of an 1801 mansion. Students will learn about architecture and daily life in the McLellan House and will study fine and decorative arts that provide insights to 19th-century America.

Sculpture All Around
Third and Fourth Grades
Investigate the materials, techniques, and subjects of three-dimensional and relief sculpture. From realistic portraits in marble to abstract assemblages of wood and metal, students will discover the dynamic physicality of art that occupies the space around them.

Land, Sea, and Sky
Fourth and Fifth Grades
Travel through the Maine landscape on this tour that explores how nature inspires artists. Students will see paintings from a variety of time periods using different techniques and media that capture each artist’s individual response to Maine’s unique environment.

Learn how artists use line, shape, color, form, texture, and space to create works of art. Students will look at examples of realism, impressionism, and modernism to see how artists make choices about using the elements of art to express feelings and ideas.
