Founded in 1983, the Friends of the Collection comprise of a group of individuals whose support goes directly to a fund for purchasing works of art and conservation of the collection. With gifts ranging from $100 to $10,000 annually, the Friends' support is the Museum's single greatest resource for purchasing art.
The Friends form a special community that meets several times a year for informative programming: lectures, workshops, gallery talks, and visits to museums, galleries, artists' studios, and artistically significant places in Maine. The Friends have funded the purchase of many iconic objects in the collection, including Hiram Powers's marble bust of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Charles Frederick Kimball's Coal Sheds, Topsham and Brunswick, Marsden Hartley's Kinsman Falls, Marguerite Zorach's Diana of the Sea and The Garden, Celeste Roberge's Rising Cairn, and Charles DuBack's The Coopers, among many others.
