Curatorial Department Intern

The Portland Museum of Art (PMA) is searching for an Intern for the Curatorial team. The chosen candidate will assist Curatorial team in research, interpretation, care of the PMA collection as well as related programming. The intern will have the opportunity to work closely with Curatorial staff, as well as other museum departments, to advance the Portland Museum of Art’s mission.

Essential Job Functions: 
  • Researches works in the museum collection to support curatorial programming.
  • Conducts special assignment research under the direction of the Curatorial team.
  • Collaborates with Curatorial and Registration teams to improve object data and records.
  • Assists with and maintains interpretive materials in the galleries.
  • Assists in preparation and execution of day-to-day curatorial programming.
  • Opportunity to develop a gallery talk related to candidate’s personal and professional interests as they relate to the Curatorial department’s priorities.
  • Other administrative duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibility: 
None.
Qualifications: 
  • Ideal candidate has an interest in art, art history, and the museum world.
  • Strong interest in art historical research.
  • Commitment to working with a variety of people.
  • Preferably pursuing a degree in Art Education, Art History, or Museum Education; and has a knowledge of Art History. Must be at least a rising college junior.
  • Self-motivated and a desire to learn about curatorial practice.
  • Ability to foster relationships and build philanthropy with patrons at the PMA, as defined by displaying behavior that welcomes all individuals contacted during work. This may include answering questions, utilizing approachable body language such as smiling and making eye contact, thanking people for visiting the PMA, and other open and engaging behavior daily.
  • Ability to work independently, be a proactive problem-solver, a flexible and creative thinker, and possess strong organizational skills.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with coworkers and those outside the organization.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.
Working Conditions: 
  • The majority of work is performed in a museum or gallery setting or in a normal office environment not subject to extremes of noise, temperature, odor, etc. Work involves extended sitting, computer use, and small muscle tasks; extended periods of standing and/or walking.
Terms: 
The volunteer position is unpaid, part-time, 20 per week; days of the week are flexible. Interns receive free admission to the museum for themselves and a guest, as well as discounts in the PMA Store and PMA Café.
