Contemporary Art In the present day, Maine continues to be a place that attracts a wide range of artists, both as year-round residents and summer visitors. In addition, students and faculty at the Maine College of Art in Portland and other colleges in Maine contribute to the very active artistic community in this state. Their work forms the core of the contemporary collection of paintings, sculpture, and graphic art. In addition, photographs in the Ernst Haas Memorial Collection denote the close relationship between the Museum and a number of contemporary photographers who, like Haas, offer summer workshops throughout the state. Every other year, the Portland Museum of Art Biennial exhibition offers visitors a sampling of contemporary art from all of these sources. Some of the artists on view in this gallery include Robert Indiana, Louise Nevelson, Neil Welliver, Lois Dodd, and Yvonne Jacquette.
