Jonathan Borofsky’s sculpture Human Structures (24 Figures Connected), newly unveiled in the David E. Shaw and Family Sculpture Park, proudly asserts the importance of social connections—or, in the artist’s words, “humanity connecting together to build itself.” Independent curator and always-engaging speaker Patterson Sims will discuss the role of public sculpture in contemporary society—how it brings us together and apart.

The PMA is thrilled to host the Portland launch for Handcrafted Maine: Art, Life, Harvest & Home, the new book by writer Katy Kelleher and photographer Greta Rybus. This gorgeous book serves as an overview of Maine arts and crafts in the contemporary era, and the launch will bring together people from throughout the Maine community in support of the state's incredible network of gifted makes. Kelleher and Rybus will be signing copies of the book.

This August, we’re welcoming the professional dancers of the Portland Ballet Company to share performances inspired by A New American Sculpture, 1914-1945: Lachaise, Laurent, Nadelman, and Zorach. You can try your hand at sketching the poses of the dancers and the sculptures. It’s an exciting and interactive way to engage with the exhibition that the tiny dancers in your life will love.
