There are whispers on the Portland-area playgrounds that the PMA has a haunted mansion. This is, of course, preposterous. Sure, the McLellan House is old and stately, and it’s easy to imagine walking by after dark and seeing a mysterious shadow in the second-story window. But trust us, it’s probably just Mike in security.

The year was 1882. Portland was wildly different then: many men sported beards, nearly everyone made crafts, and the food was locally sourced. As a stronghold for the temperance movement, people weren’t so into drinking craft beers, but that’s OK—at just 22 years old, the state of Maine was barely old enough to drink, anyway.
