Under the direction of the Director of Development, develops and implements successful strategies for managing the Portland Museum of Art’s (PMA’s) individual membership program, Annual Fund, and constituent database, effectively contributing to the fundraising and constituent relationship priorities of the museum’s mission and strategic plan.

Volunteer Positions

Docents at the Portland Museum of Art play a vital role in introducing the museum and its collection to a wide variety of audiences through individualized, guided gallery experiences. Using interactive teaching methods, they encourage close looking, facilitate discussion in the galleries, and help visitors make personally meaningful connections with the collection. By supporting the programs and goals of the Learning and Interpretation department, docents serve as ambassadors for the museum by reinforcing the museum’s mission as a vital cultural center.

Intern will assist the Director of Learning and Interpretation and L&I staff to help visitors make connections to the PMA collection and special exhibits through programming and in-gallery experiences.

The Learning and Interpretation department strives to encourage curiosity and wonder for all visitors to the PMA. By offering audiences of all ages opportunities to connect with authentic works of art through programs that offer open-ended experiences, intellectual rigor and exploration of the creative process, we intend to impact the lives of PMA audiences.

Intern will assist the Chief Curator and Curatorial team in research, interpretation, and programming of the PMA collection. The intern will have the opportunity to work closely with Curatorial, Registration, and Preparatory staff, as well as other museum departments, to advance the Portland Museum of Art’s mission.
