Carl Nelson (United States, 1898–1988), Birches, 1965, oil on canvas, 50 x 50 inches. Gift of Frederick A. Fox in memory of Clarice Fox, 1991.82. | Art of the Cranberry Isles For generations, Maine’s Cranberry Islands, off the southern end of Mount Desert Island in Frenchman’s Bay, have served as inspiration for artists. Among those who have lived and created art there are Marvin Bileck, George Bunker, Walker Evans, William Kienbusch, Emily Nelligan, and Carl Nelson, among others. In the 1950s New York-based artists John Heliker and Robert LaHotan purchased a home on Great Cranberry, which now hosts a residency program for practicing artists, continuing the visual legacy of the Cranberries. This exhibition features 34 works drawn primarily from the collection of the Portland Museum of Art. |
