House Beautiful Now: High School Students and American Design Student Art Exhibition
May 17, 2008 - June 7, 2008
This exhibition of student work is the culmination of a collaboration between art and geometry students from Portland High School and the Museum to explore American architecture and design. Students began with visits to the Frank Lloyd Wright and the House Beautiful exhibition last fall, then compared Wright's designs for domestic architecture to historical precedents as seen in the Museum's McLellan House and collection of 19th-century decorative arts. Students then studied contemporary design trends and met with local architects. Art teacher Tory Tyler-Miller had students explore their own ideas about materials and design, while geometry teacher Barbara Solomon led students through an intensive study of architecture. House Beautiful Now has been supported by Unum and the Wing-Benjamin Trust.
