Portland Museum of Art Announces Artists Chosen for the 2007 Biennial

(Portland, Maine) After receiving 920 entries for the 2007 Portland Museum of Art Biennial exhibition, the Portland Museum of Art is pleased to announce that 98 works by 61 artists have been selected for the show. This past summer, artists submitted 3,680 images to be considered by a panel of three jurors: Ellen Miller, founder of Miller Block Gallery in Boston; Johnnie Winona Ross, nationally recognized artist and former faculty member of the Maine College of Art; and Judith Stein, freelance curator, art critic, and author. The jurors spent a weekend in September viewing images and selecting the work for next year’s Biennial. Of the 61 artists chosen, 17 have exhibited in previous Biennial exhibitions. The 2007 Biennial will be on view from April 12 through June 10, 2007.

As a series, the Biennial exhibitions create a visual record of Maine’s evolving contemporary art scene and testify to the profound influence that the landscape, traditions, and people of Maine continue to have on living artists. Maine has nurtured artists for centuries, and its influence reaches far beyond its borders; although the majority of Biennial artists are residents, a number are part-time residents or recent graduates of Maine’s many prestigious art programs. This blending of influences and experiences enriches the state’s artistic community and helps to define its art scene as one that benefits from a diversity of traditions both established and new.

A full-color catalogue will published in conjunction with the exhibition and will be available in the Museum Store next spring.
